Fairytales

Little Red Riding HoodI’m thinking of spending some time on my Little Red Riding Hood retelling, it’s still only half written, but I fancy publishing it here on my blog once it’s finished. I love fairy tales, but not the sugar coated, Patriarchal, females as submissive, happily ever after nonsense. No, give me the original messy, sexy, frightening fairy tales and lets remember that we have told each other scary stories for years. In the dead of night with only the light of a fire and the only sound the crackling of the logs and the movements of the forest, it’s easy to see why our ancestors made sense of the world by naming their fear through creatures and people in stories full of horror and gore. Yes I think Ruby needs to be taking out of my C drive, dusted off, tightened up and brought to view. Keep your eyes peeled folk, it’ll be coming to the blog soon.

But for now here are some great fairytale quotes:

“Once upon a time fairy tales were told to audiences of young and old alike. It is only in the last century that such tales were deemed fit only for small children, stripped of much of their original complexity, sensuality, and power to frighten and delight.”
Terri Windling, White As Snow

“The world is a fairy tale; we are its guardians.”
Dejan Stojanovic,

“Fairy tales in childhood are stepping stones throughout life, leading the way through trouble and trial. The value of fairy tales lies not in a brief literary escape from reality, but in the gift of hope that goodness truly is more powerful than evil and that even the darkest reality can lead to a Happily Ever After. Do not take that gift of hope lightly. It has the power to conquer despair in the midst of sorrow, to light the darkness in the valleys of life, to whisper “One more time” in the face of failure. Hope is what gives life to dreams, making the fairy tale the reality.”
L.R. Knost

“Be thankful for what you have. Your life, no matter how bad you think it is, is someone else’s fairy tale.”
Wale Ayeni
