So As part of the Literary+ getting to know you exercises we were asked to write a 100 word bio and then swap it with our allotted partners. Using our partners bio we wrote a 300 word flash fiction. So without further ado here is my flash fiction based on James’ bio. Enjoy:
Pulling the car to the side of the road, he hiked the quarter mile or so to the wide ridge of the hill, his camera bouncing against his chest as the strap quivered from his wide striding steps. It felt good after spending last three hours driving back from a job to have the wild wind tousling through his hair and filling his lungs with the Texan air. His years working in the timber industry has left his body muscled and firm and he climbed the steep rise easily, stopping only to frame and take the occasional shot that caught his eye. Slumping his body onto the ground he rolled onto his back blinking at the wide cloudless sky that dripped brilliant blue against the orange singed earth that now ground into his shirt and blue jeans. It had been years since he had stopped to take a short hike rather than simply driving through on his way home to the delightful noisiness of his three kids, and a TV blaring into the night air through the open patio doors. It was deserted out here, apart from the road in general the view was unadulterated by human habitation. The only sound he could hear was the rustling of the undergrowth and ……the sound of shovels on earth? No, wait that didn’t sound right. Flipping on to his belly, he crawled towards the sound, nervously peaking his head over the ridge where a sheer drop revealed three sweaty men digging a hole at gunpoint. The man holding the shotgun was large, his face partially hidden by the wide rim of his hat, but James could just see that he donned a large bushy black moustache and a firm grip on the trigger. ‘So much for my quiet hike’ he thought.
